Skwierzyna (Schwerin
Warthe) is located in the
part of present day Poland, which until 1945 and for much
of its history was part of the Prussian province
of Posen, Germany. Following the border changes agreed by the
Versailles Treaty, all of the former province of Posen, except the
counties of Fraustadt, Meseritz and Schwerin Warthe, briefly became part of the province of
Grenzmark. Then again following the reorganisation of German provinces in
1938 Kreis Schwerin Warthe and the nearby Kreis Meseritz joined
East Brandenburg. In 1945 the German population of the town either
fled from the advancing Soviet Army or was expelled when the area
around Schwerin Warthe became part of Poland. In the place of the
German populace came new arrivals from all over Poland and what is now Ukraine.
The change from Germany to
Poland led to both Skwierzyna and the villages
around Skwierzyna being given different names. Here is a
list of most of the surrounding hamlets and villages. See also: population
figures for Schwerin Warthe (Skwierzyna).
